French designer Jean Paul Gaultier is calling it quits after a 50-year career in the fashion industry. “This show celebrating 50 years of my career will also be my last. But rest assured Haute Couture will continue with a new concept,” the designer shared. The unexpected news comes after he disclosed a major 50th-anniversary Haute Couture show scheduled to take place on January 22. The 67-year-old made the announcement of his final collection by filming a casual conversation over the phone.
While he’s taking a step back from his namesake label, he clarified that Gaultier Paris will continue and that he is working on a new concept, which will be revealed soon. Most famous for dressing celebrities like Madonna, Gaultier’s rise to fame came from his fearlessness to subvert industry norms in the ’80s. He also collaborated with Supreme on a collection back in April–his first ready-to-wear collection in nearly five years.
