Social media has enormous power in helping raise awareness of injustice around the world – this time of George Floyd murder and Black Lives Matter movement.
Millions of people took to Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and other social media platforms to express their anger by sharing photographs and videos of anti racist protests across the world. Among that, there were also multiple sources of donation organisations and calls to sign a petition.
However, some people got quite upset the way certain celebrities has responded to the Black Lives Matter movement. One of the “targets” was Kendall Jenner. Many users started to share images of police and cans of Pepsi from the controversial ad Kendall did for Pepsi in 2017.
In the campaign, Kendall Jenner takes off her blonde wig, smears lipstick, and joins a group of protesters holding “PEACE” signs. The reality star then approaches a police officer and offers him a can of Pepsi inn sign of peace and solidarity.
The brand was then highly criticised and accused of cultural appropriation for a protest commercial gone wrong. Pepsi regretted the commercial and apologised for “putting Kendall Jenner in this “position” which also lead to the ad being pulled away from TV immediately.
