OVER 2.6 MILLION FANS PETITION NBA TO CHANGE ITS LOGO TO KOBE BRYANT

As the world continues reeling from the shocking loss of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and the seven other passengers involved in a fatal helicopter crash this Sunday in Los Angeles, widespread movements have already begun to ensure the NBA legend is forever immortalized. Earlier today, it was confirmed that the basketball veteran would be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, and now, a growing Change.org petition has garnered millions of signatures requesting that the league update its logo with Bryant’s image. The petition was launched by user Nick M whose statement with the post reads: “With the untimely and unexpected passing of the great Kobe Bryant please sign this petition in an attempt to immortalize him forever as the new NBA Logo.” It has since exploded across the internet, climbing to 2.1 million signatures and counting at the time of reporting, with a goal set for 3 million signees in total. The NBA’s current logo features a silhouette image of former Los Angeles Lakersplayer Jerry West. It was originally designed by Alan Siegel in 1971 and has only received one minor update over the years when the font was upgraded in 2017. West, who recently shared a statement with the Los Angeles Clippers regarding Bryant’s passing, nor the NBA has yet to comment publicly on the petition. Bryant, a five-time NBA champion and 18-time All-Star honoree, was 41 years old at the time of his passing. He is widely considered one of the greatest athletes of all time, having retired in 2016 after 20 seasons in the game. While his off-court career had only just begun, Bryant had already begun making strides in other lanes, even nabbing an Oscar award for his short film Dear Basketball in 2018.
