The Grammy’s announced they will stop using the term “urban” for it’s music categories. The decision comes after Tyler, The Creator and Billie Eilish espresso their disagreement and frustration on the issue.
Interim President and CEO Havey Mason Jr. stated that they’ve been discussing this issue for a couple of years and that the term “urban” has been a hot topic for some time now. A lot of artists didn’t feel that description is suitable for their work and style of music.
This announcement came less than a week after artist Billie Eilish took to Instagram to denounce the “urban” categorisation, supporting Tyler, The Creator’s thoughts after he won the Grammy Award in 2019 for Best Rap Album for his album IGOR. Eilish also expressed her thought on this in June 4 for British GQ interview: “I have always hated categories.”
Republic Records was one of the first music labels to encourage cancelling the “urban” genre and encouraged the rest of the music industry to follow their lead.
